PicoSkyFT Radiation testing – Round 2 @ CERN, Geneva , Switzerland
SkyLabs is doing second run of radiation tests on our proprietary PicoSkyFT processor by high energy particles accelerator at CHARM, CERN. Testing campaign at CERN is another important milestone for PicoSkyFT technology, in order to prove robustness and high maturity level of the processor.
First testing campaign has been performed In October 2017, at Proton Irradiation Facility (PIF), PSI Switzerland. The PicoSkyFT processor has been irradiated with the high energy protons (225MeV), with 6 orders of magnitude higher fluxes according to LEO orbits. The proton beam testing campaign has been successfully concluded, thus irradiation activities continues also with other types of high energetic particles.
Beside even higher energies of heavy ion particles (@ 40 GeV) and assessment of radiation effects on electronics at the system level the testing camping in CERN is also special in a way that enables kind of In-Orbit Demonstration on the ground. The monitoring of such complex system is for the first time in history performed solely via remote control, from SkyLabs premises (Slovenia). An air distance between Geneva, CH (CERN) and Maribor, SI (SkyLabs) is 736.19 km (457.45 miles) which already represents a very good approximation to In-Orbit Demonstrator of PicoSkyFT processor in LEO orbits. Special acknowledgments go to ESA TEC-EDD experts, enabling SkyLabs performing these tests.
